Since its inaugural store in 1971 in Germiston, Makro has experienced significant growth. It was South Africa’s first cash-and-carry store, utilizing advanced technology for inventory and sales management. By 1989, under the leadership of MD Mark Lamberti, the brand expanded, laying the foundation for Massmart, a leading wholesale and retail group, with Makro as its cornerstone. The renowned Woodmead store, established in 1993, stands out as a key retail destination in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs.
The 2011 merger with Massmart and the global retail giant Walmart further diversified Makro’s offerings, enhancing the variety and affordability of its products. 2014 marked a significant step in Makro’s digital progression with the launch of its e-commerce platform, further enriching the customer shopping experience with the convenience of online browsing and purchasing.
