What is load shedding?
Load shedding is a term familiar to virtually every South African. It refers to the deliberate interruption of electricity supply to parts of the distribution system, typically on a rotational basis, implemented when the power system is under strain.
In South Africa, this practice has been primarily associated with the national power utility, Eskom, which has grappled with maintenance issues, an aging infrastructure, and insufficient capacity to meet the country’s growing energy demand.
Load shedding, while often criticized for its disruptive impact on daily life and economic activities, is seen as a necessary evil to prevent a total collapse of the power system. It has resulted in South Africans having to adapt their lifestyles and business operations around these power outages, spurring innovation in areas like renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Nonetheless, the quest for a more stable and sustainable energy solution continues to be a major discussion point in South Africa.
